Before 2006, the Mwika Marketplace was open-air, exposed to sun and rain. Goods were spread on the ground which frequent rains turned into slicks of mud.
There were no toilet facilities and no running water in the market. Now, the new market has 11 open sheds with concrete flooring, roof overhead, and eight of the sheds have permanent stalls built of concrete. The market has piped water and public toilets.
The market was built with generous support from
the Rotary World Community Service and the Government of New Zealand.
